As managers move higher in their organization and assume new responsibilities (or move to entirely different roles), it can be more difficult for them to get accurate and unbiased input about their performance and leadership skills from their managers. It is also often assumed that they intuitively KNOW what to do in all situations. Many leaders recognize that to focus their personal development plans they need the uninterrupted time and attention of a skilled, objective professional - an executive coach. While the perfect coach would often be their immediate boss, there are a number of reasons why this is impractical in most organizations including – as my clients often tell me – it is hard to tell your boss you are not certain how to handle a situation.

The coach you choose to work with is important to the benefits you will receive. Here are some suggestions for choosing your coach:

1. Most Executive Coaches work by phone. This is most convenient for the client. After putting together your short list of possible coaches, schedule ½ hour get acquainted sessions with each of them to learn about their backgrounds and experience (not just as coaches, but as business people, too – can they relate to YOUR situations), discuss your goals, discuss the process the coach follows and their costs (Most professional coaches will do this for free.)
2. Look for chemistry. Is this a person who you will be comfortable working with on a regular basis? Will you be able to listen to both positive and negative feedback from the coach?
3. Some executives find their coach through the Internet. More often, they select a coach who has been recommended by someone they trust - a customer, a colleague, or a personal friend. Whichever approach you use, check some references.
4. When you decide to choose an Executive Coach and commit to the process, be prepared to commit to a minimum of three months – this is the amount of time it normally takes for a solid coaching relationship to develop.
5. Check the Executive Coach's flexibility. Sometime it is critical for the coach to come to your location to meet, to observe you and others in group settings (to be that ‘fly on the wall’) and to work with your entire management team on a specific situation.
6. Can your Executive Coach be a trusted confidant? I have clients who have me meet with others in their organizations to help them understand what is going on that is not being surfaced (always reported confidentially).

Our coaching process is simple. No two client situations are the same so flexibility is critical. In many cases the client chooses to talk 2 - 4 times per month by phone. In some cases, clients prefer to talk 1 - 2 times per month, and then as needed. The client decides what goals are to be achieved. Assessments, surveys and discussions with co-workers are often used to help us both understand the client better. Each confidential coaching session builds on the session before. Each session brings the client closer toward their goals. And we don’t just talk. Often, the client and the coach have work that is expected of them prior to the next ‘session’.
